Under these circumstances, this is not the kind of spotlight a sourcing specialist normally enjoys. I was involved with one situation where critical shortages were occurring with an ever-increasing frequency. Weekly shortage meetings became daily, hot lists proliferated, and priorities changed almost hourly. Something was inherently wrong in the process. I looked at a few examples of these shortages and drilled down to the underlying issue, which often could be laid at the feet of an inaccurate or lost Kan Ban card.
Today’s companies are sourcing raw materials from South America, subassemblies from Far East countries such as China and Vietnam, software and design from India, precision parts from Europe, and final assembly from Malaysia or Mexico. It is a mandate for the contemporary sourcing department to seek out and discover effective resources, evaluate each for its total costeffectiveness, and create key strategic alliances to ensure a constant flow of the goods and services desired. Future sourcing opportunities are not limited to mining veins of new suppliers and vendors.
Look then to the total package price. You may find a line item or two with higher costs, but if the complete package is lower than the current summation of all the various vendors in use today, then you have a strong case for consolidating vendors. In this process you will find that the total indirect costs of managing orders to a number of suppliers has been reduced.
