However, children between the ages of 6 and 10 believe, according to Nagy, that a single germ causes all kinds of illness; only at age 11 are children starting to understand that specific germs cause specific diseases. Bibace and Walsh (1980) offer further evidence of concordance between Piagetian states of cognitive development and children’s explanations of illness. According to these researchers, preschool children (aged 2–6 years) explain illness phenomenologically, attributing illness to trees, the sun, or magic.

Results indicated that a very small percentage of the children (15%) accounted for 50% of all of the visits and that approximately one-quarter of the children never visited the health office. Other studies of school health office visits are also of interest. Stamler and Palmer (1971) studied the relation between elementary school-age children’s visits to the health office and ratings of dependence of the children. Although the study had sampling problems, the results indicated that children who frequently visited the health office also had high dependency ratings.
