They might tell you that if this is not clear, no answer will satisfy you, and any answer you might be given will only be understood as an invitation to ask the next question. The intellect, however, is convinced that to each question there is a comprehensible and ‘right’ answer. It says: ‘Just be clear with me and don’t tell me that this understanding is beyond me. ’ Yes indeed, the intellect apparently did all these things and much, much more; but please note the use of the word apparently here.

All this is not to suggest that rascally sages are the only true sages, as this would again be an attempt to create an image to which the preferred sage should conform. Nor is it meant to suggest that a sage could never be a saint, but only that a sage needn’t be – that a sage may as well be a housewife, a soldier, or a businessman.
The invitation to see this is extended in this very moment, and the guidance of a formal teacher, while helpful to many, is not needed. There are no fixed rules as to how awakening should occur. The problem with preconceived notions about the much-coveted holy grail of truth and the packaging in which it should be delivered, is that such notions prevent the seeker from seeing that the liberation he is looking for is always fully present and instantly available. Ramana Maharshi said: Make no effort to work or to renounce; your very effort is bondage.
