Plotinus (204/5-270 CE) was once the 1st and maximum of Neoplatonic philosophers. His writings have been edited through his disciple Porphyry, who released them decades after his master's dying in six units of 9 treatises every one (the Enneads).

They were aware that the western part of the Roman Empire, however much it looked back to the past, was now something else. The creation of the concept of Christendom in the ninth century was the product of fundamental changes in western Europe in the eighth century, events that are clearly "medieval" in whatever sense may be given to that term. 43 They centered on the alliance between the papacy and the strongest of the barbarian successor states, the Frankish kingdom. 44 Through this marriage of convenience the papacy gained the protection of a fully orthodox ruler, while the Frankish monarchy acquired an eminence among the barbarian states that led to the creation of the medieval western empire-a renewal of empire, not just a continuation.
