The median yearly total family income of the families ($78,000) indicates a relatively affluent sample, with three qualifications: First, in the recruitment of two-parent families with a first child about to enter kindergarten, we attracted mostly two-job families (71% of the women were employed at least half-time). Second, there was enormous variability in the income levels (with the SD of the sample more than $30,000 per year), so there was certainly a range of income levels represented in the sample.

Before we focus on the intervention results in chapter 11, we examine different perspectives on the family context of parenting during the preschool period, and explore how multiple aspects of family functioning predict children's academic achievement, social competence, and internalizing and externalizing behaviors in kindergarten and first grade.
