PREFACE This book addresses the origins of attachment in mother–infant face-to-face communication and its implications for adult treatment. Mother–infant communication provides the foundation for emotional development from infancy through young adulthood. In this book we use microanalysis of videotaped interactions to show how mothers and infants co-create subtle and complex patterns of relatedness during face-to-face communication at 4 months. We document how these patterns lead to styles of secure, resistant, and disorganized attachment when the infant is one year old.
