Food isn’t the only thing that got more expensive in the peak of 2008. 4 Aluminum prices more than doubled. Cotton prices quadrupled. Lead prices went up by a factor of 5. Uranium prices tripled. All of these numbers are adjusted for inflation. After more than a century of everything getting cheaper, all the things I’ve just mentioned, from oil to food to building materials and industrial ores, are getting more expensive.
What about coal? The world is currently producing a record amount of coal, as well. The total amount of energy in the roughly twenty million tons of coal mined each day is roughly the same as the energy in the oil produced each day. Coal can’t directly run cars, trucks, and planes, but through a process called coal to liquids it can be turned into a gasoline-like fuel. 19 That, Deep Impact Even the International Energy Agency, a body that for years saw no peak of oil production in sight, now sees it arriving imminently.
