One way of claiming the one-ness of science is through theoretical reduction. For example, the thesis of the reducibility of biology to chemistry and physics implies that living organisms are nothing other than very complex physico-chemical systems, but what does this mean? Two claims are made: (a) that the characteristics of living things can be fully described in terms of the concepts of physics and chemistry and (b) that the behaviour of living things which is explicable at all can be explained by laws and theories that are physical or chemical.
