Doctors are faced with huge amounts of fresh knowledge about the human body and they too have access to vast reservoirs of electronically stored information. Nobody seriously puts forward the case that they will need little working day-to-day knowledge in the twenty-first century.
SOME TERMS AND CONCEPTS The curriculum—what is taught and learned in schools—should be accessible to all with a legitimate interest in it: teachers, pupils, parents, governors, members of the public. I have tried to avoid, wherever possible, the sort of confusing jargon with which discussions about curriculum can be laced. There are a few terms and concepts, however, which are used, so these are explained below. Cell For simplicity the cubic curriculum has ten subjects, eight cross-curricular themes and six forms of teaching and learning.
The same would apply to the other sides of the cube. Eventually a structure containing millions of cells would have been assembled, comprehensive perhaps, but difficult to grasp. The labels attached to each dimension of the cube in the figures in this book, therefore, are merely illustrative, for reasons given in Chapter 1. The first dimension, the subjects of the curriculum, illustrates this point very well. It is not an actual programme of subjects such as a class or individual might follow. The cubic curriculum illustrated in this book simply takes, as exemplars, a number of the subjects often found on a school or college timetable.
