Because of their coruscating wit, and the fascination of many of the debates, Shaw's plays have been included in Literature syllabuses, and he has come to be regarded as a great literary figure; it is on this set of criteria that his reputation rests, not on his practice of theatre. Pinero, on the other hand, wrote for the theatre, not for the study. His plays ironically, and sometimes despairingly, reflect the society around him; many of them are pleas for tolerance and compassion.
