Introduction where the ideas are represented by witty lay figures, most of whom speak like Shaw himself. Because of their coruscating wit, and the fascination of many of the debates, Shaw's plays have been included in Literature syllabuses, and he has come to be regarded as a great literary figure; it is on this set of criteria that his reputation rests, not on his practice of theatre. Pinero, on the other hand, wrote for the theatre, not for the study. His plays ironically, and sometimes despairingly, reflect the society around him; many of them are pleas for tolerance and compassion.
She has a 'pale, saintly, beautiful face'. The question which immediately arises in the mind is whether her faint is genuine, or whether she is acting. Her pallor, and her trembling as she recovers, would point to a real faint. There is no doubt at all that Vashti has many cures to her credit.
