Where there are degrees of perfection, there must, he thinks, be something that has maximum perfection, and this must account for the occurrence of the perfection in other things. And the goal-directed activity of non-rational things suggests that they are governed by what is rational. Some things are found to be more good, more true, more noble, and so on, and other things less. But such comparative terms describe varying degrees of approximation to a superlative; for example, things are hotter and hotter the nearer they approach to what is hottest.

132 His point about the ‘essence of a thing’ is that definitions of objects (whether real or imaginary) tell you what they are like in a timeless sense. You can know what a dog is without knowing when dogs came into being or even whether there are dogs. By the same token, so Aquinas reasons, you can know what the world is without knowing whether or not it had a beginning. Or could it be that there really are cogent arguments for the world having a beginning? One argument Aquinas considers states that it must have had a beginning simply because it is made and ‘everything that is made has a beginning to its duration’.

Hence if the emanation of the whole universal being from the first principle be considered, it is impossible that any being should be presupposed before this emanation. For nothing is the same as no being. 114 Hence, not surprisingly, Aquinas can add (1) that a distinction must be drawn between creating and changing,115 and (2) that only God can create. e. by bringing about a change in things. According to Aquinas, however, God, in creatively bringing something into existence, is not acting on anything so as to modify things somehow.
