They kept certain people out of the city. At night the gates were shut to prevent marauders or bandits, other undesirables or wild animals from entering at will. It was also through the gates that supplies came in and went out. Whatever or whoever came in or out of a city had to do so through the gates. There was no other way in or out. Both good and evil came in or left a city through the gates. The structure of walls and gates was much different from today. Both the walls and gates were several feet thick.
