He went deep into his thoughts—thoughts that shouldn’t have gone so deep. Not yet. The few bucks he was making shouldn’t have mattered to a boy who started life in a three-story manor home they jokingly called the “Roadside Cottage,” but they did now. He’d watched, not fully understanding, as the last of the staff left the place—just before the family moved from the cottage to somebody’s empty three-bedroom carriage house in Saint David’s, with Peter’s uncle paying the rent. Father had moved out, with Mother’s encouragement.

This one took place more than a year after Pete died, at Johnson Space Center in Houston. NASA had decided to dedicate a section of land at JSC to the memory of the astronauts who have departed this life, whether from old age, accident, or illness or in the line of duty. For each astronaut, a tree is planted, and there is of course a ceremony when a new one is added to the grove. As you can imagine, the ceremonies are fairly reflective, sometimes somber affairs. When we dedicated Pete’s tree, his beloved friend and Apollo 12 crew-mate Al Bean decided that Pete should be the one determining the tone of the day.
