SOLID-STATE SENSORS Solid-state sensors (Fig. 2-7) are also known as direct digital receptors because they display the radiographic image instantaneously following exposure. There are two different types of solid-state sensors: charged coupled devices (CCD) and complementary metal oxide semiconductors (CMOS). These sensors differ in how the image is captured but appear similar in both external appearance and image output. Both CCD and CMOS sensors use a scintillation screen (usually gadolinium oxysulfide or cesium iodide) to transform the x-ray energy into visible green light, which is then converted into a visible image.
