Between 1792 and 1806, David Thompson (1962 [1784-1812]), wintered at posts within present Rock Cree territory in Manitoba and recorded information on conceptions of human-animal relations that persist in many essentials into the present. George Nelson (Brown and Brightman 1988) composed in 1823 at Lac la Ronge, Saskatchewan, an extended manuscript on the spiritual knowledge and practices of the Chippewas, Saulteaux, and Crees with whom he had traded. The Crees of Lac la Ronge belong to the same linguistic and social division as those of Pukatawagan and Granville Lake, and again the continuity between the present and what Nelson observed in the early 1800s is evident.
