Money-Kyrle’s account of normal countertransference is to some extent equivalent to the definition of transference, in so far as it relates to the analyst’s early childhood relationships that are now impinging on the encounter with the patient. However, the difference between normal countertransference and transference is that it can be used as a form of empathy if the analyst has some conscious awareness of it and can contain it in the interest of the patient. Money-Kyrle appears to imply that normal countertransference interferes with the analytic process when it remains outside of the analyst’s awareness and is too akin to the patient’s transference.
