Restrained and reticent to the end, Dorothy Wordsworth offers a challenge to the reader accustomed to the surfeit of twenty-first century autobiographical excess. Gertrude Stein’s speculations on human nature and the human mind help illuminate the radical philosophical and aesthetic import of Wordsworth’s challenge to the confessional subject.
