Ennead V (Loeb Classical Library, Volume 444)

Plotinus (204/5-270 CE) used to be the 1st and maximum of Neoplatonic philosophers. His writings have been edited by means of his disciple Porphyry, who released them decades after his master's loss of life in six units of 9 treatises every one (the Enneads).

Plotinus looked Plato as his grasp, and his personal philosophy is a profoundly unique improvement of the Platonism of the 1st centuries of the Christian period and the heavily similar considered the Neopythagoreans, with a few impacts from Aristotle and his fans and the Stoics, whose writings he knew good yet used severely. he's a distinct mix of mystic and Hellenic rationalist. His inspiration ruled later Greek philosophy and inspired either Christians and Moslems, and remains to be alive at the present time due to its union of rationality and severe spiritual event.

In his acclaimed version of Plotinus, Armstrong presents first-class introductions to every treatise. His worthwhile notes clarify imprecise passages and provides connection with parallels in Plotinus and others.

The second face, the lower one, turns below to gaze at the sefirot, emanating its wisdom to them. You too should have two facets. The first is your aloneness with God, to increase and refine your wisdom. The second, to teach others some of the wisdom that God has poured out upon you. As Wisdom emanates to each sefirah according to its dimensions and need, so should you emanate to each person according to the dimensions of his mind, whatever he can handle, what addresses his needs. Be careful not to give more than the mind of the recipient can hold, to prevent any mishap, just as the highest sefirah does not exceed the limits of its recipient.

Dangers of Contemplation THE ORIGIN OF THOUGHT WHEN YOU are praying, imagine God speaking with you; teaching and conducting you. You receive his words in awe, trembling, and sweat. Contemplate that everything God teaches humanity is infinite, yet thought expands and ascends to her origin. Upon reaching there, she is stopped and can ascend no further. By way of parable: a spring of water emerging from its source. If you dig beneath it, to prevent the water spreading out in all directions, the water will rise to the level of the source and no further.

THE NAME OF NOTHINGNESS THE DEPTH of primordial being is called Boundless. Because of its concealment from all creatures above and below, it is also called Nothingness. " the answer is, "Nothing," meaning: No one can understand anything about it. It is negated of every conception. No one can know anything about it—except the belief that it exists. Its existence cannot be grasped by anyone other than it. " BEING AND NOTHINGNESS YOU MAY be asked: "How did God bring forth being from nothingness?
