Page 19 PART II SHOULD I RAISE MY CHILD BILINGUALLY? A major question facing many immigrant and minority group parents is whether or not they should raise their children bilingually in the first place. Here, questions such as what effects bilingualism has on the child's development, what degree of bilingualism it is possible to achieve in various family situations, and how much effort will be required of parents, are frequently raised.

In contrast to the majority language child who has many sources of language and cultural input, for the minority language child the parents may represent the major or only source of input which the child receives. Thus, while the societal basis of "bilingual families of the second kind" doubtlessly strengthens such families and makes it easier for them to hand on to their children a language which is not common in the general environment (a societal prop for family bilingualism that many "bilingual families of the first kind" lack, either entirely or in part, and often wish they could have), their immigrant status is often a handicap, socially, economically and, at times, legally as well. Another type of bilingual family is that which pertains to indigenous minorities.
