It is clear that, due to the pulsating transport of material, higher penetration can be produced by a greater number of buckets on the cutter head without reaching the limiting capacity of the conveyor belt. Figure 3-5 Limiting range of penetration, determined by the conveyor belt capacity of the TBM [143] The contrasting material flows of the continual excavation and the discontinuous material removal leads, with a low number of buckets, to a jam of material between cutter head and face. With a large number of buckets, this process is relatively insignificant.

2 Basic Principles and Definitions The description tunnel boring machine (TBM) refers to a machine for driving tunnels in hard rock with a circular full-cut cutter head, generally equipped with disc cutters. The rock is cut using these excavation tools by the rotation of the cutter head and the blade pressure on the face. Tunnel boring machines have sometimes also been described as milling machines, but this does not describe their method of operation. In contrast to drilling and blasting, where it is possible to react flexibly to the interaction of tunnel and rock, either by subdividing the excavated section or by a rapid adaptation of the support to the geological situation, this is not possible driving with TBMs.

This varies today between 140 and 160 m per minute. Disc cutters are simple discs, less often multiple discs or TCI bits, and roll against the face with the rotation of the cutter head (Fig. 3-1). The rock is crushed by the rolling disc cutter tools because of the thrust on the cutter head and, because the shear or tension strength is exceeded, spalled off between the roller tracks. 1 The Boring Process The performance of the boring process depends on many factors, which can be collected into three groups.
