The choice between these different pathways is dependent on the ease of stereospecific functionalization of the sugar, the solubility of the monomer and polymer, the potential incompleteness of the removal of the protective group, and the ease of purification. 1 Monomers from Protected Carbohydrates The commercial availability of a range of carbohydrates provides access to a wide array of different glycomonomers, and significant efforts have been dedicated to the synthesis of polymerizable vinyl sugars.
