Let me remind you of what he wrote in his first important analytic publication, the Studies on Hysteria (Breuer & Freud, 1893-95): Replying to an imaginary patient, he makes this response: 'No doubt fate would find it easier than I do to relieve you of your illness. But you will be able to convince yourself that much will be gained if we succeed in transforming your hysterical misery into common unhappiness.
In executing this project, I have drawn on contemporary philosophi cal studies of action concepts, mind and existence. I shall be developing three interrelated theses concerning the nature of the clinical psychoanalytic enterprise: (1) that it con structs a personal past of a certain kind; (2) that it constructs a present subjective world of a certain kind; and (3) that both of these constructions require a relatively systematic transformation of the terms in which the analysand defines and understands his or her life history up to and including the present moment.
