In executing this project, I have drawn on contemporary philosophi­ cal studies of action concepts, mind and existence. I shall be developing three interrelated theses concerning the nature of the clinical psychoanalytic enterprise: (1) that it con­ structs a personal past of a certain kind; (2) that it constructs a present subjective world of a certain kind; and (3) that both of these constructions require a relatively systematic transformation of the terms in which the analysand defines and understands his or her life history up to and including the present moment.

The infantile issues of defining oneself and others, of loving and hating oneself and others, of activity and passivity, pleasure and pain, danger, idealization, identification, reparation, reality testing—all of these are constituted in the terms of these categories of under­ standing.
