It would make no sense to consider the development of travel in Egypt, for example, separately from similar developments in the ‘Fertile Crescent’ of the valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates in modern-day Iraq. Moreover, for much of its history the entire region, together with parts of North Africa, has been under a single unified political control, and the whole area is here considered as one region – at least for the purpose of considering its travel history. 1). The ‘Fertile Crescent’ of Mesopotamia in modern Iraq and the valley of the River Nile in Egypt were the locations for the development of some of the earliest known urbanized societies.

Very little overseas travel took place for leisure purposes right up until the middle of the nineteenth century, when travel still remained both expensive and dangerous. Local tolls and taxes and unreliable rates of exchange of foreign currency meant that travellers had to take with them enough money to cope with all eventualities (which might include a prolonged stay in hospital), and the gold they carried made them a source of prey for bandits or highwaymen. However, this was all about to change.

The Six-Day War with Israel in 1967 damaged newly built canal cities, and the Suez Canal was blocked by sunken ships. In the Yom Kippur War of 1973 Israel held the east bank of the canal against Egypt, but was forced out in 1982, when the canal was dredged and reopened. Today, Egypt is investing substantially not only in the Canal Zone but also in new tourism infrastructure on both sides of the Gulf of Suez and in the southern Sinai. This is partly to diversify Egypt’s tourism product from the attractions of Luxor and the Nile Valley (thought to be vulnerable to international terrorism), and partly to capitalize on the coral reefs of the Red Sea and create beach and dive-tourism resorts.
