Are autism and Asperger syndrome different labels or different disabilities?
This might have been the case because of the semantic constraints imposed by Kanner's descriptions of his autistic syndrome and his belief in its uniqueness. Schopler (1985, 1996) pointed out the problems caused by the use of the term Asperger syndrome, particularly the confusion over its relationship with high-functioning autism. The disadvantages of the idea of Asperger syndrome are also semantic, arising from the different ways the concept is interpreted. By the same token, there would have been similar diagnostic problems if the only label for children with autistic disorders and average or high IQs were high-functioning autism.
