Joseph Pulitzer. 36 Essie was a bright youngster and graduated from high school in 1914 after only three years. There she registered to major in domestic science, probably because it was unusual for a black woman to major in chemistry at that time. She later discovered that it was the science part of domestic science that she liked. She was bored with her courses after two years, left the University of Illinois, and went to Teachers College of Columbia University to study chemistry.
